Taekwondo Canada Announces Team Canada for 12th World University Taekwondo Championships

The WTF Taekwondo Association of Canada is pleased to announce the team representing Canada at the 12th World University Taekwondo Championships in Pocheon, Korea May 25th – 30th, 2012.

This year’s event involves both Poomsae and Kyorugi, Patterns and Sparring, respectively. For the first time for Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Taekwondo, Taekwondo Canada will have representation in both.

Head Coach of the team is Master Joel Ridley of Kingston, Ontario, who has been involved for three years since 2010. Team Leader is Master Scott Woodhouse of London, Ontario, extending his nine-year run with the event since 2004.

Canada team is comprised of seven athletes in total; four competing in Sparring and three in Poomsae. The Sparring athletes include Male Fly, Pasqualino Gallucci (-58kg), Female Bantam, Jenny Bae (-53kg), Male Light, Jason Song (-74kg) and Male Heavy, Kevin Hatt (+87kg). Competing in the Patterns competition are Gloria Cho in Individual and Mixed Pair Poomsae, Jenny Bae in Individual Poomsae and Chyang Jeff Hsiao in Individual and Mixed Pair Poomsae.

Hatt is the most experienced athlete in the group, making his third straight appearance with Team Canada. Song represents Canada with his second straight appearance. For Hatt and Song this will also mark their final appearance at the Championships.

For Gallucci, Bae, Cho and Hsiao, their participation at these Championships is the first in their respective Taekwondo careers.

Team Leader Woodhouse places a priority on the overall learning experience for this team from an event of on this international stage:

“My first priority of our TKD Team is to enjoy the overall experience , and to better themselves individually. In my experience since 2004, learning and gaining the overall experience to take back home individually is the most gained here,” comments Woodhouse.
